My students and I are traveling with @ilchiostroworkshops in the Dolomites, staying at the beautiful Stadt Hotel Città in Bolzano. For the next few days, the Dolomites are our home studio.

We’re spending our time sketching together, sometimes diving into a creative lesson, other times finishing pages in our sketchbooks. This group of artists has traveled with me before through Il Chiostro. They are seasoned travelers and dedicated drawers, yet there’s always something new to learn from each other.

Artists are never bored when drawing. Everything feels fresh, even familiar sights, once you put pencil to paper. Today was a perfect day for capturing the many layers of mountains using one of my favorite approaches: modified blind contour drawing.

My mom, Clare McCarthy, taught me how to work with alcohol inks. We had so much fun playing with this medium and watching these colors become flowers. Somehow, Mom and I can turn anything into flowers!

Ron and I are so fortunate for the many opportunities we’ve had to travel together. Sometimes I’m teaching, sometimes I’m not—but we always make it an adventure. To keep these moments alive long after the trip is over, Ron creates memory books, and I fill my sketchbook.

Cicada Across the Potomac, Cicada Cuddles, Dancing Cicada

They became my unexpected muses, with their segmented bodies, bold eyes, and delicate, lacy wings. The more I painted them, the more beauty I discovered in these fascinating little creatures.
