These photos capture some of the joy and connection that unfolded during our travel workshop in Tuscany. Our Il Chiostro host, Michelino, is a wonderful singer who serenaded us more than once. His music added such heart to the experience.

There were smiles all around as we painted, shared stories, and encouraged one another. The creative energy in the studio was full of laughter, color, and friendship. Every photo holds a little spark of that Tuscan magic.

Magical moments from the trip ✨

Dried herbs hanging in the archway of a traditional leather school in Florence meant to mask the street smells, now adding charm to the doorway.

My laundry line makes an appearance again (packing light has its perks!), and our shared studio space is just steps away filled with focus, laughter, and art talk.
Everywhere you turn, there’s history. Ancient stone stairs, an old well covered in greenery, even the hollow trunk of a centuries-old tree.

This is Nora, Michele, and me at the Siena Campo, the famous square where the Palio takes place each summer. The Palio is a centuries-old bareback horse race held twice a year, in July and August, and sometimes for special occasions. Ten riders, each representing a different district of Siena, race through the square in a thrilling burst of tradition and energy.

Standing there, it’s easy to imagine the excitement and history that fill this space. Even without the race, the Campo has its own magic, sunlight, color, and the feeling of being surrounded by stories that have been unfolding for hundreds of years.

On our first evening in Florence, we wandered through the city when everything was closed and still it felt almost like walking through a painting. By morning, the streets had come alive in that unmistakable Florentine way!

Later, in Siena, I spent time inside the Duomo, taking in the intricate marble floors, the grand architecture, and the exquisite trompe l’oeil paintings that draw your eye into imagined spaces. Every corner of the church feels like an artwork in itself.

We Made It to Tuscany!

When you think of Tuscany, you probably think of wine, and you’d be right! Our group had the joy of visiting the beautiful vineyards of Dievole Winery and Vineyard in the Chianti region. Dievole produces exquisite wines and olive oils, which we enjoyed each evening. Every meal felt like a celebration for the senses, with delicious flavors, breathtaking views, and endless inspiration.

We spent our days painting and sketching on the grounds, surrounded Mary Archambaultncient olive trees, anTeresa Brunsonover the vines. Look at those grapes!

Our group photo was taken in the charming walled town of Monteriggioni, known as the “Crown on the Hill.” It’s the kind of place where every corner begs to be drawn, painted, or admired (and yes, there’s some great shopping too).

Suitcase packed and ready to roll! After two beautiful days in Verona, we’re off to Bolzano and then Cortina in the Dolomites. More beauty to come. ✨

One of the highlights here was visiting the Verona Arena, where the Winter Olympics Closing Ceremonies will take place — watch for it on TV! Our wonderful Il Chiostro host, Michelino, brought the history of this site to life.

And yes… I’ll definitely miss the food. There is no food like Italian food. Pizza and pasta will always have my heart. 🍕🍝❤️

Next week, many in our group will follow me to Tuscany. We’ll meet more sketchbook friends, enjoy new scenery, and collect fresh views and memories to draw.

We’ve been visiting so many beautiful cathedrals and historic sites — I’ve lost track of all the names! Each one has its own magic, and I really should get better at recording them all.

One of the highlights of the day: a playful drawing exercise where we sketched each other four different ways — Blind Contour, Modified Blind Contour, Continuous Line, and with our Non-Dominant Hand. After so much concentration, the results were hilariously wonky yet still recognizable. Plenty of laughter filled the room! ✏️😂

And of course… what’s that drink on the table? Aperol Spritz — my favorite in Italy. Somehow, it always tastes better here. 🍹✨

We enjoyed breathtaking views from above as we rode a gondola to charming mountain-top towns around Bolzano. Every turn offered something new to take in.
One of the most magical stops was a lake called Carezza A Lago, “The Caresses on the Lake.”

Our @ilchiostroworkshops guide, Michelino, described it as a healing caress. I couldn’t agree more. My painting doesn’t capture it fully, but it will always remind me of the rich, heavenly colors that surrounded me that day.

My sketchbook pages are more than memory joggers—they record where I’ve been and sometimes become inspiration for larger paintings down the line.
