A Creativity Challenge

For anyone who has ever taken one of my classes, you have heard me say, “If you don’t like something, do more of it.” It is just one of my mottos. Doing more of the thing that is not working in your painting often fixes an awkward composition, an unwanted pattern, a line in the wrong place and many more trouble areas. It almost always works!
This motto also works if you are not happy with your creativity or your desire to create. If you want motivation to get better at drawing, mixing colors, thinking out of the box, composition, techniques, watercolor, colored pencil or ink just DO MORE OF IT!
In this class, I will demo a different creative idea or concept. It is designed to challenge you just enough to jump start your creativity but also easy to do so you will not be intimidated. You will be able to take it as far as you want to go with it! We will start working on it together and you will finish it on your own.
By the following Thursday, if you send me what you have done (email it to email@example.com) , I will post it on my Website so you can see the many ways everyone was inspired to create their unique piece! You can see them HERE.
Two sessions to choose from:
Thursday 4:00 – 5:30 pm on Zoom
Thursday 7:00 – 8:30 pm on Zoom
$25 per class
WATERCOLOR BASICS: Color Intensity (bright or dull)
Thursday, December 17 at 4:00 or 7:00
You learned about COLOR, TEMPERATURE (just a little), VALUE and now it’s time for INTENSITY. This is how bright or dull a color is. You will actually learn how to make MUD! Once you know how mud is made, you will know how to avoid it when you do not want it in your painting. But remember, a little mud in your painting is always a good thing. It just has to be the right color of mud!
watercolor paper (Arches 140 lb cold pressed is my favorite)
Intensity Chart: either printed on your wc paper or draw it ahead of time.
CLICK HERE for the printable Intensity Chart PDF This will fit on 1/8th of a full sheet of 22×30 paper,or you can draw it any size you would like.
pencil to write down your colors
watercolors- PRIMARIES: red, blue, yellow and SECONDARIES: green, orange and purple (if you do not have the secondary colors, make them using your primaries)
brush: round # 8 or 10 is my favorite size for this
In case you are wondering what supplies I use…
I highly recommend
Arches Watercolor Paper 140 lb. cold press white 22 in. x 30 in. sheet $7.08 a sheet. Cut or tear into 8 equal sheets (7.5×11 in). This will be enough for all 4 Watercolor Basics classes. You will love this paper so get an extra sheet if you can!
Simply Simmons Original Decorative Brush Round size #10 $3.59 or use a round one with a nice point that you already have. I have many other favorites that you can see on my Favorite Supplies list. Sign up on my website to receive it.
Winsor & Newton Cotman Water Color Paint, Set of 12, 8ml Tubes $27.54 This is NOT the BEST quality but pretty good with a variety of primary and secondary color choices. The better (and a bit more costly, but worth it!) artist quality brands are: Winsor & Newton (not Cotman), Daler Rowney, Holbein, Daniel Smith, Schminke. There are many others too.
My favorite: MEEDEN Airtight Leak-Proof Watercolor Palette – Peel-Off Palette Foldable Travel Paint Palette Box with 18-Well & 3 Mixing Areas for Watercolor, Gouache & Acrylic Paint, Blue Case $11.95 Or use the one you have. Be sure to have plenty of mixing area. You can use an extra tray/plate if your palette does not have a nice mixing area.
SCRUBBER BRUSH YOU WILL LIKE: (You will NOT need these to make your Intensity Chart)
Creative Mark Ultimate Watercolor Scrubber Paint Brush Set, Stiff White Nylon Bristle, Short Handle Paintbrushes for Color Lifting and Mistakes – Set of 3 $8.99 You will want to have these in your supply box!
